A Note About Dentistry on the Internet
"Do not believe something just because you read it." Nowhere has this truth been more evident to me than when I am researching a dental or medical subject on the Internet. Quackery abounds and it is extremely important to ask yourself, "Who wrote this and what was the writer's motivation?" "Who will profit from the action or purchase that is being urged?" Some things to beware of are junk science with no substantiating literature or literature only from that organization, single issue groups with a "cause" such as anti-fluoridation and anti-amalgam, and dentists selling their own services where those services are way out of the main stream. Be wary of dentists advertising a special piece of equipment where the equipment manufacturer is promoting it's "user' dentists. Watch out for anyone selling a new gadget or nutritional supplements. Also, be on the lookout for extreme fear tactics and scares. If you are concerned, delve deeper and do some real research at Medline, or check with a local dental school and find out what they are teaching, and why, before you buy blindly into the current anti-science movements.
